So this is the Skullcandy Terrain, now skullcandy did a good job of packing this speaker with features and it also has a long lasting battery life… but it only sounds good enough to get the job done. But today we’re going to compare the Skullcandy Terrain to the JBL Flip 6 which is a lot more premium and it sounds much better. So lets see if it worth it to you to go with something like the Flip 6.

Regarding pricing, the Skullcandy Terrain has a retail price of $60… where as the Flip 6 has a retail price of twice as much… $120 but it likes to go on sale for $100. Overall, I love recommending the flip 6… but if you want to pick either of these two speakers up theyll be linked down below.

Now first lets talk about the design of these two speakers. Both speakers are small portable bluetooth speakers, they’re both very durable cause they have fabric wrapped bodies, they’re both water proof and they both have a carrying strap so you can carry these speakers or attach them to something. Really the main difference between these two speakers is their weight, the terrain weighs in at 458 grams and the flip 6 weighs in at 550 grams. Nonetheless, both of these speakers are good options if you’re looking for something to take in the go with you.

But when it comes to tech specs… the flip 6 has an advertised battery life of 12 hours but thats with it playing at 50% volume. Real world use with this speaker playing at 80% volume, which is a really good listening volume, its going to be good for about 8 hours of playback time.

Where as with the Terrain, it has an advertised battery life of 14 hours… but with it playing at max volume its going to be good for about 8 hours of play back time. But the reason why the Terrain has a longer lasting battery life is cause its a 12 watt speaker where as the Flip 6 is a 30 watt speaker. So the Terrain just isn’t going to get as loud as the Flip 6.

And when it comes to chargning these speakers, they both charge via a USB C port as they should. But this is the only port that you’ll find on both of these speakers and with both of these speakers they can only be used wirelessly cause they dont have an audio jack, which honestly is pretty normal now for a speaker of this size.

Now when it comes to the bluetooth connecvity of the speakers, the flip 6 can be connected to 2 devices at the time where as the terrain can only be connected to one device at a time… but at least you can watch videos with both of these speakers cause latency isn’t an issue.

But with all of the simple stuff out of the way, lets talk about sound. The terrain has your typical dual frontward firing woofers, and dual passive radiators that shoot out the sides. Where as with the flip 6, its setup is a little more impressive. The flip 6 has a frontward firing woofer that handles the mids and it has a tweeter that handles the highs, and it has dual passive radiators that shoot out the sides. Now the woofer and tweeter set up on the flip 6 is important cause it helps this speaker sound more open, but let me just show you.

So like you may have just seen, the woofer handles the mids and the tweeter handles the highs, so that is going to give the flip 6 a lot better instuemnet separation. But now were going to jump into the sound test, both speakers are playing at 75% volume with their stock EQs.

So from a sound quality stand point, the Terrain has a very strong v shaped sound signature. As in it puts an emphasis on the bass and highs but there isn’t much detail in the mids. So with the terrain, you’re mainly going to hear the bass and vocals… and this speaker is going to sound rather narrow. Where as with the Flip 6 is sounds a lot more open cause it has much better instrument separation, there’s a lot more detail in the mids, and this speaker also has much deeper bass than the Terrain. And with the flip 6, you can also adjust its sound to your liking cause it has an adjustable EQ… where as with the terrain, you’re stuck with it V shaped sound signature. And when it comes to max volume performance, the flip 6 gets significantly louder than the Terrain. So plainly said, the flip 6 sounds much better than the terrain. It has much better instrument separation, it has much better detail in the mids, it has more bass, it gets louder and distortion isn’t a problem of the flip 6… which is something that I can’t say about the terrain.

But finally lets talk about pairing these speaker with other speakers. The flip 6 is using JBL’s PartyBoost so you can pair it up with other JBL PartyBoost speakers like a boombox 3, boombox 2, Xtreme 3, charge 5, pulse 5, pulse 4, a flip 5 or another flip 6 and you can pair up to 100 speakers together.

Now if you’re going to be mixing and matching speakers… then your speakers are going to play in sync… but if you want to get left and right stereo sound going, then youre going to need to have 2 of the exact same speakers.

Where as with the terrain, its using skullcandy’s multi link and you can connect it to a Terrain Xl, Terrain or Terrain mini and you can get them to play sync and you can connect up to 99 speakers together.

But also, if you get 2 terrain speakers, regardless of size, you can get them to play in left and right stereo mode. So overall, both of these speakers have really good speaker paring protocols cause they are both easy to use and skipping isn’t an issue… but I am going to say that skullcandy is a little better cause you can get stereo sound going with any two terrain speakers.

So with all of that being said, yes the JBL Flip 6 is more expensive than the Skullcandy Terrain, but it sounds significantly better. It has much better insutmenet separation, it has better detail in the mids, it sounds much more open, it gets louder and it has more bass. Where as with the Skullcandy Terrain, it sound good enough to get the job done. So if you want to save some money and if you want something that’s going to last you a long time on a single charge, then you’ll might want to go with the Skullcandy Terrain.
