So this is the Earfun UBOOM X, its a very affordable large bluetooth speaker that gets imrpessively loud and it has some extra useful features as well. And today we’re going to see how this speaker compares to both the JBL Boombox 3 and Sony ULT 7 which are noticeably larger and more expensive than this speaker.
Regarding pricing, the Earfun UBOOM X has a retail price of $190 which is extremely reasonable if you ask me, and it can also be found on sale for $160 from time to time. Where as the JBL Boombox 3 has a retail price of $500 but it likes to go on sale for $400 and the Sony ULT 7 also has a retail price of $500 but it likes to go on sale for $300, which I feel is an insanely good price. Nonetheless, if you want to pick any of these speakers up they’ll be linked down below or you can always press on the YouTube shopping button.
So first theres the design of the speakers, now all of these speakers are meant to be durable and portable… but the Earful UBOOM X is the most portable speaker here cause its smaller, its lighter and it also has a shoulder strap. So taking this speaker on the go with you is going to be objectively easier than these other two speakers. But overall, all of these speakers are easy enough to travel with… but more importantly, both the JBL and Sony look and feel more premium cause they have a mostly fabric wrapped body where as the Earfun has a plastic body.
But also, both the Earfun UBOOM X and Sony ULT 7 have built in light features… and these light features look better at night or in doors. But personally I dont really care for either of these two light features, but they are there if you want them.
Now when it comes to battery life, the UBOOM X has an advertised battery life of 30 hours… which is a lot. However this advertised battery life of 30 hours is with this speaker playing at 50% volume, with its stock EQ and with the light feature turned off… which is still good. But real world use with this speaker playing at 80% volume, which is already very loud, and with the light feature turned off, its good for about 10 hours of playback time… not bad at all.
But then there are these two larger speakers and real world use with these two speakers playing at 80% volume… they’re both going to be good for about 8 hours of play back time. And 80% volume is noticeably louder and fuller than 80% volume on the UBOOM X, and 80% volume on the ULT Filed 7 is noticeably louder than 80% on the JBL Boombox 3.
Now when it comes to charging these speakers, both the Sony and JBL charge via a double barrel AC port… which is nice cause this way you don't have a power brick to worry about. But with the UBOOM X, this speaker charges via a USB C port which is super convenient. But the really cool thing about this USB C port is that you can also use it to charge your own devices…
Where as with both the Sony and JBL they dont have USB C ports to charge your own devices. Instead they have USB A ports… but personally I really wish that both the Sony and JBL had a USB C port to charge your own devices cause most phones these days comes with USB C to USB C charging cables.
But something that all of these speakers do have are audio jacks, so you can use them with a wired connection. And I know this sounds very basic but I do have to point this out cause audio jacks are rare on smaller speakers now.
But something that is unique to the Sony ULT Field 7 here is that it does have a quarter inch input so that you can either plug in a microphone for karaoke, or you can also plug in a guitar if you want. But personally, I like that you can use this speaker with a microphone if you want.
But finally when it comes to bluetooth connectivity, all of these speakers can be connected to 2 devices at the same time so that you and a friend can both be DJ. Latency is not an issue for any of these speakers so you can use them to watch videos with on your phone… but when it comes to audio codecs, the BoomBox 3 only has support for SBC, where as the Earfun UBOOM X has support for SBC and AAC and then theres the ULT 7 which has support for SBC, AAC, and LDAC which is Sonys own in house high res audio codec.
But with all of that out of the way, lets talk about sound. Regarding speaker set up, both the Earfun UBOOM X and Sony ULT Field 7 have dual frontward firing woofers, dual frontward firing tweeters and dual passive radiators that shoot out the sides. Except, on the Sony it is larger. Where as with the JBL Boombox 3, this speaker has a frontward firing subwoofer, dual frontward firing woofer, dual frontward firing tweeters which are stacked on top of the woofers and dual passive radiators that shoot out the sides. Now with all of these speakers you can go into their apps and you can adjust their EQ to your liking… but now we’re going to jump into the soundtest. The Earfun UBOOM X is playing at 75% volume where as both the JBL Boombox 3 and Sony ULT 7 are playing at 63% volume and the ULT 7 is set to ULT 2.
Sound Test
So as expected, the Earfun UBOOM X does an amazing job of keeping up with these larger and more experience speakers. However both the JBL Boombox 3 and Sony ULT 7 manage to get louder, they have more bass and they sound more open the Earfun UBOOM X… but given the overall value of the UBOOM X… thats perfectly fine. But when comparing the JBL Boombox 3 to the Sony ULT 7, the Sony ULT 7 does sound fuller in the mids and the bass is stronger cause Sony is really focusing on improving the sound pressure on their speakers. Overall, as expected both the JBL Boombox 3 and Sony ULT 7 sound better and get louder than the Earfun UBOOM X, but thats perfectly fine given the overall affordability of this speaker… However I do feel that if you are trying to choose between the Boombox 3 and ULT 7, my pick here is going to be the ULT 7.
And finally lets talk about pairing these speakers up with other speakers. Now with the all of these speakers, if you have two of the same speakers then you can wirelessly pair them up and get them to play in left and right stereo mode. Or with the UBOOM X you can get up to 50 speakers together and get them to play in sync.
But then theres the JBL Boombox 3 which is using Partyboost and you can pair it up to other party boost speakers like either another JBL Boombox 3, Boombox 2, Xtreme 3, Charge 5, Pulse 5, Pulse 4, Flip 5 or to a flip 6 and again you can have up to 100 speakers together… and you can also connect it to the JBL Xtreme 4 which is using aura cast, but it is backwards compatible with party boost.
But then theres the Sony ULT Field 7 which is using Sony’s Partyconnect and you can connect it up to other Partyconnect speakers like either another ULT 7, an XG500, XG300, XE300, XE200, or to an XB43, XB33, or XB23. But the really cool thing about Sony’s Party connect is that you can connect your smaller speakers to any of Sony’s larger speakers which are also using Partyconnect like either an ULT Tower 10, XV900, XV800, XV500 or XP700 or XP500. And this is cool cause you cant connect any of JBL’s smaller Partyboost speakers to any of JBL larger Partybox Speakers.
Nonetheless, I feel that all of these speakers have good speaker pairing protocols, but if you do plan on expanding your collection of speakers, then you’ll might want to go with Sony cause they have a lot more speakers to choose from that you can connect to one another.
But with all of that being said, the Earfun UBOOM X gives you a really big bang for your buck. This speaker does a great job of keeping up with these larger and more expensive speakers, but its slightly smaller and slightly more portable and I really like that you can use its USB C port to charge your own devices… and I like that you can charge the speaker itself via a USB C port. However these larger and more expensive speakers are going to give you more sound and better quality sound. And personally, I do recommend that you go with the Sony ULT 7 over the JBL Boombox 3 cause it sounds better, it can be used with a microphone for karaoke, and its more affordable too.
